The purpose of the Spade and Trowel Club is to stimulate interest and knowledge in gardening, flower arranging, and conservation for the benefit of our membership and the community.
Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month in member homes or public venues. Coffee and social time begins at 9:15 a.m., followed by a 9:30 a.m. business meeting and program. Hostesses serve lunch. Membership is limited to 35 members. Spade and Trowel Club was organized by Mrs. Malcolm Farquhar of the Kennett Garden Club, the senior club of Kennett Square at the time. The club joined the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania (GCFP), District 1, in 1946. As a member of GCFP, we are included as members of the Central Atlantic Region (CAR) of The National Gardens Club, Inc. (NGC). To celebrate the 80th birthday of the club, a chronicle was created to provide a glimpse of the club's rich history. That chronicle was updated to celebrate the 85th birthday of the club. Each year visit our booth at the Kennett Square Holiday Village Market! Find holiday floral arrangements, birdseed wreaths, waxed amaryllis, swags, dried flower ornaments, and more—perfect for gifting or decorating your home. |
Our members are involved in a broad array of projects and community service that reflect our interests, including
- maintaining the garden bed next to Waywood Beverages, at the north entrance to Kennett Square
- maintaining the kitchen garden at Barns-Brinton House in Chadds Ford
- assisting the Kennett Square Beautification Committee with their spring plant sale.
- planting flowers in the barrels that adorn the streets of Kennett Square with the proceeds from the spring plant sale
- providing holiday arrangements for Heartland Hospice Services and Friends Home Residents
- teaching local preschool children how to create floral arrangements
- participating and competing in an In-house Flower Show, the Longwood Flower Show and the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show.
- offering a scholarship to a Kennett High School graduate pursuing further education in horticulture.
