The purpose of the Spade and Trowel Club is to stimulate interest and knowledge in gardening, flower arranging, and conservation for the benefit of our membership and the community.
Our members are involved in a broad array of projects and community service that reflect our interests, including
Horticulture Presentations are designed to increase member knowledge regarding plant identification, culture, and uses. Specimens are provided to stimulate interest in the plant and to encourage exchange of plants among club members.
Design Presentations are created to increase member knowledge on various methods of design.
Visit our booth the first weekend in December at the Kennett Square Holiday Village Market to purchase holiday greens, paperwhites, amaryllis, topiaries, or holiday floral arrangements.
Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month in member homes or public venues. Coffee and social time begins at 9:00 a.m., followed by a 9:15 a.m. business meeting and program. Hostesses serve lunch. Membership is limited to 35 members.
Spade and Trowel Club was organized by Mrs. Malcolm Farquhar of the Kennett Garden Club, the senior club of Kennett Square at the time. The club joined the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania (GCFP), District 1, in 1946. As a member of GCFP, we are included as members of the Central Atlantic Region (CAR) of The National Gardens Club, Inc. (NGC).
Spade and Trowel Club has won many individual and club awards and has been enjoyed by many members throughout its history.
To celebrate the 80th birthday of the club, a chronicle was created to provide a glimpse of the club's rich history. That chronicle was updated to celebrate the 85th birthday of the club.

Our members are involved in a broad array of projects and community service that reflect our interests, including
- maintaining the garden bed next to Waywood, at the north entrance to Kennett Square
- maintaining the kitchen garden at Barns Brinton House in Chadds Ford
- teaming with another local garden club to have a spring plant sale, led by the Kennett Square Beautification Committee.
- planting flowers in the barrels that adorn the streets of Kennett Square with the proceeds from the spring plant sale
- providing holiday arrangements for Heartland Hospice Services and Friends Home Residents
- teaching local preschool children how to create floral arrangements
- participating and competing in In-house Flower Show, Longwood Flower Show and PHS Philadelphia Flower Shows
- providing a free tree sapling giveaway at the Farmers Market on Arbor Day
- offering a scholarship to a Kennett High School graduate pursuing further education in horticulture
