Spade and Trowel Club, member of the Garden Club Federation of PA (GCFP), is an organization that stimulates interest and knowledge in gardening, flower arranging and conservation for the benefit of our membership and the community.  As a member of GCFP, we are included as members of the Central Atlantic Region (CAR) of the National Gardens Club, Inc. (NGC).

​​HOLIDAY GREENS WORKSHOP


​Each December, members of the club make about 80 holiday arrangements for Heartland Hospice Services and Friends Home Residents

​PENNSYLVANIA GARDEN PARTY 


The Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania(GCFP) is excited to be hosting a statewide garden tour called the PA Garden Party.  Nearly 100 gardens will be open for visitors on Saturday, June 20 and 27, 2026, rain or shine. 

Spade and Trowel Club will sponsor local gardens, which will be open to visitors on Saturday, June 27, 2026.  
​

T​he tickets will be on sale starting January 6, 2026. ​

​2026 PHS ​PHLADELPHIA FLOWER SHOW
February 28 - March 8, 2026

The Spade and Trowel Club and individual members of the club have been exhibiting in the Philadelphia Flower Show for years, and will again in 2026! 

​We entered the Front Door class in 2024 
"Front Stoop -  Join the Party!"
and won the Blue Ribbon. 
​We were also honored with the Philadelphia Horticulture Society Gardening for the Greater Good Award.



 Community Events

WAYWOOD GARDEN 

Our members maintain a welcoming garden at the entrance to Kennett Square next to Waywood Beverages.  A 'refresh' is currently underway!

With the permission of PennDot, club members maintain the bed throughout the year.

​BARNS-BRINTON KITCHEN AND HERB GARDEN 

Barns-Brinton House is a historic colonial tavern and garden located in Chadds Ford.  Our members have maintained the appropriate period herb and kitchen garden for over 45 years.  The beds were recently relocated & rebuilt by the Chadds Ford Historical Society.  Our members have completed the transplanting and maintenance is once again underway.

​KENNETT SQUARE BARRELS
​

In conjunction with Kennett Collaborative, we plant the street barrels with seasonal flowers and greenery.




​FLOWER ARRANGMENTS AT HEAD START IN KENNETT SQUARE

​We provide materials and guidance to three and four year old children at Head Start in Kennett Square so they can make flower arrangements.

​We provide materials and guidance to three and four year old children at the Montessori School in Kennett Square so they can make flower arrangements. ​

​2025 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED

Since 2022, we have provided a scholarship to a Kennett High School graduate pursuing further education in Horticulture, Environmental Studies and/or related fields.

​FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS FOR BRANTWYN CLASSICS

​
Club members make floral arrangements for the Brandywine Valley Symphony's annual fundraiser, The Brantwyn Classics.  This year's event was held on Sunday, October 5th. 





​

​LONGWOOD GARDENS FLOWER SHOW

Our club, in conjunction with seven other garden clubs in GCFP District 1, holds
 an NGC Standard Flower Show at Longwood Gardens every other year in the fall.

All gardeners and flower arrangers are invited to exhibit in the show.  The show is open to the public with admission to Longwood Gardens.
